Ghost MV1 Review (2021) – Now out of Business

Updated: October 6, 2023
Editors Note: Please be advised that Ghostvapes has gone out of business and the Ghost MV1 is being discontinued and any purchases won’t be supported for warranty. You can find our list of best portable vaporizers in the market here.

Ghostvapes has sent around the following email about their situation:

“The GHOST team has been working tirelessly over the last 3 years to deliver the best vaping experience to customers. We all learned, the hard way, how challenging it is to break into this category on top of limited federal and global support for legal recreational cannabis.

We have been in “Fundraising mode”  for the better part of a year with management and key investors financing the group, but unfortunately it has become clear in the last few days that this support is no longer an option. As a result, the Directors of the Company have, at this time, made the difficult decision to cease operations globally. With the current macro environment due to the coronavirus, lack of sufficient funds to carry the business forward, and all other options exhausted, there is no other option.

We are extremely grateful for the support you have given us.”

We’ve reviewed the Ghost MV1 in the past, when it was first released, it received mixed feelings in the community, offering good flavour but not without its own share of issues and shortcomings. Now in 2019, a new revision has come along and the market has shifted quite a bit since. How does the Ghost MV1 stack up in today’s market compared to the competition like the small but powerful Zeus Arc and is it still worth the price in 2019? Check out our Ghost MV! Review here for more info!

How it Works – The Ghost MV1 has a bit of a learning curve

The Ghost MV1 is a bit of a complicated vape to get down and not really the best pick for beginners. The herb chamber itself is a removable pod named a ‘cruicible’ where you load your herb.

Right from the beginning, grind consistency and pack type will influence performance quite a bit. We recommend a medium and fluffy grind which is very gently packed down for the best results – airflow is key!

Sliding the crucible back into position and sealing the chamber leads you to the next step. Hold the button down until the LED flashes green and then you’re good to go! While you go to take a draw, just hold down the button for the entire duration of the draw, releasing when done.

Stirring the chamber after a few hits will lead to better cooking of your herb and your draw technique will also influence the vapour quality. Stick to a long and heavy draw for optimal results.Ghost MV1 available colors

Temperature Flexibility – The GHOST MV1 has 3 Pre-set temperatures and an APP

With the GHOST app, you can set your own temperature settings alongside the three preset temperatures. There is also one for concentrates which we’ll get to in a bit.

Aside from cycling between these 5 settings, there is no way to choose a temperature from the device itself. This is a bit of an oversight but not too important we’ve come to learn – once you find your favourite temperatures, you’ll typically stick to that.

From the app itself, you can choose between anywhere from 300-470°F/149-243°C, with the three presets at 340/365/390°F, or 171/185/199°C. These settings by default aren’t too high and better for flavour and moderate hits, but you can also set your own high-temp modes from the app for those real lung busters.

Be wary of temperatures over 428°F/220°C, as your dry herb becomes prone to combustion at these levels and it’s definitely a possibility. At temperatures over 446°F/230°C, you should really only use concentrates.

The highest temperature setting does pretty great for concentrates, though we feel a little bit higher on the temperature spectrum would yield even better results like the Focus V Pro that has temperature as high as 240°C.

Vapour Quality – Great flavour from the GHOST Vape but tricky draws

The Ghost MV1 definitely has some great tasting vapour– if you can get it! The MV1 is notoriously tricky (like the Firefly 2+) to nail for vapour, but once you hit it, wow does it hit well!

The vapour production can range from wispy but intensely flavourful all the way to lung-busting and ultra-dense, full extraction. You can clear a fully loaded crucible in just a couple of well-done hits, and really throw your head for a loop if you’re using the potent herb. Not to mention the cooling path the vapour takes makes the vapour incredibly smooth!

With concentrates too, the Ghost MV1 hits really hard, albeit not as hard as a dedicated rig. Still, with the concentrates insert and wax, the MV1 puts out some pretty potent and flavourful hits. Definitely one of the best dry herb vapes on the market in terms of vapour quality, with only a few other units matching the power the Ghost can put out.

Manufacturing Quality – A Sci-Fi looking vapourizer

Space-age indeed, just like the Hybrid Volcano the Ghost MV1 even looks like something right out of a Sci-Fi film and feels like it too. It’s very well built and honestly quite attractive if you’re into the strange aesthetic.

It feels very substantial in the hand and has a nice heft to it. It’s well built and proven to be moderately reliable though a handful of people have reported some reliability problems before.

The finish on the stealth black is great, while the glossy finish on the other units is a dust and fingerprint magnet like no other. No precise temperature control on the device itself is a bit of a shame too.

Included in the box is a decent kit consisting of the device itself, removable battery, cleaning kit, 1 * crucible, user manual, charger, and box. This is pretty decent but honestly, for the price we’d like to see a couple more crucibles added and a carrying pouch of sorts to keep your high-cost item safe.Ghost MV1 flat display

The Ghost MV1 sports a giant battery pack on the back of the device. While it is removable, it’s a proprietary cell and replacements are pretty costly. Strangely, this cell only packs inside 2600mAh of juice, which really is a bit underwhelming. The heater, however, is quite efficient it seems and you can clear roughly 8-12 crucibles before needing to top again.

Overall, we can’t help but feel the Ghost team could’ve done far better with the battery. Either a non-removable cell, or USB-C charging, or larger capacity. If all the effort to make a giant and heavy battery pack is done might as well have a larger capacity! If something as small as the Zeus Arc can pack 3500mah in that small chassis, then there is no reason why GHOST Vapourizer couldn’t up the battery game.

Portability – Grab a case for your GHOST MV1

The Ghost MV1 is about as big and heavy as you can get for a portable dry herb vape. It’s large, chunky, a bit clunky, and heavy. This is not pocket-friendly unless you’re constantly wearing a bit of winter coat with oversized pockets.

The Ghost MV1 is more like a home portable which can be taken out occasionally for a session if you need. If you really want a device for use at home and on the go, however, we’d recommend something smaller like the Mighty or Crafty vaporizer.

Ease of Use – An Intricate Cleaning Routine

The Ghost MV1 vapourizer also has a learning curve which is among the highest of any vapourizer. The pack and grind consistency need attention, the drawing technique needs some care, and the cleaning is pretty elaborate, to say the least.

This device is really better suited for experienced users or those who don’t mind a learning curve. Users who are just starting usually tend to prefer simple to use units like the Utillian 420.

Passing it off to a stranger or a friend may need a little coaching to get a big, satisfying hit, however, they’ll probably yield good results without too much hassle still.

Cleaning, on the other hand, is quite intricate and high-maintenance. The crucibles need to be cleaned often, the cooling system needs deep cleaning often, and overall to keep the MV1 performing as you want, it needs a special bit of attention.

Discreetness – The GHOST MV1 is not discrete

If you’ve ever seen someone taking a hit from an MV1, you’ll definitely double-take to check out the strange tech in their hand. The MV1 is not really discreet due to its size and shape, though a very quick power hit can be snuck in just a handful of seconds and leave you properly cooked. Users who prefer to be more discreet usually prefer units like the crafty vaporizers because it is small enough to be hardly visible when held.

Ghost MV1 full kitOverall Experience – Good when its working, but too bulky

The MV1 is a decent portable vaporizer – if you get it working right. It is going to be interesting to see how this device continues to age, although we predict not gracefully. It has already fallen off the radar of a lot of community members, maybe a smaller iteration can pique their interest again.

There are a lot of little steps and details that need attention to like cleaning and load consistency, and the crucible system isn’t so convenient. It’s big, heavy, chunky, and not remotely pocket-friendly.

It’s hard to choose this unit over something like the Zeus Arc, which has a bigger battery, requires less effort to get good vapour and is a lot more portable. You can see a full comparison between the GHOST MV1 and ZEUS Arc here and you can also enjoy the battle of the titans, i.e. Ghost MV1 vs Mighty here.

Is it worth the price? That’s for you to decide. Some people absolutely love their MV1, some get rid of it within a week or two of ownership. If the convenience trade-off is worth it for you, then the MV1 may be worth it for the raw power it possesses. If you’re looking for a vapourizer that still has a functioning warranty however, we recommend checking out our Firefly 2 Plus review.
