Joyetech Espion Silk Review – Silky Smooth
Review: Joyetech Espion Silk
Manufacturing Quality
One of the first characteristics of the Joyetech Espion Silk that catches the eye is the dimpled exterior. While this has the tendency to make the mod look like an oddly shaped golfball, it pays off when it comes to the feel, offering a satisfying and tactile grip that feels great to hold.
The unconventional exterior design also gives the device a very unique feel that is easily distinguished from the rest of its competition.
Now onto the main highlight of the kit, the Joyetech Espion Silk’s hypo-allergenic properties stem from the fact that it uses a thermoplastic elastomer (also known as TPE) to coat the exterior of the mod. While the chassis might just look like your typical rubberized coating, Joyetech promises that it’s so much more than that. Unfortunately, no one here at TVape has the unique distinction of having any skin allergies so I guess we’ll just have to take up Joyetech on their word.
The Joyetech Espion Silk uses a 0.69 inch OLED touchscreen which should make it a bit easier for newbies to vaping to get the hang of the device’s functionality. For those who aren’t a fan of touchscreen devices, no need to fret as Joyetech has still included the standard +/- buttons for those who prefer a tactile response when making changes to the device’s settings. And speaking of tactile response, the Joyetech Espion Silk sure does have a lot of it, most notably so in the firing button as it offers a nice click whenever pressed.
The Joyetech Espion Silk uses a centered 510 connection with stainless steel threading and a spring loaded and gold-plated 510 pin contact. So far threading the included NotchCore atomizer on top of the mod has been a breeze and the 510 connection facilitates a smooth and hassle-free connection every time without any annoying jumps or inconsistencies in the coil resistance.
flavour Quality
Joyetech is foregoing the typical tried and tested coil design and has instead included the all-new NotchCore atomizer. As the name implies, this tank makes use of their own patented NotchCoil heads and goes as far as to include 5 of them in the kit.
The coil heads use a horizontal coil orientation to supposedly get the most vapour production even at lower wattage settings. As for the actual results, I can’t say that the results are exactly mind-blowing but the NotchCoils do perform a bit above par at a wattage setting of only 30 watts.
Vapour production is great, especially when ramping up the wattage on the device. As for flavour on the hand, it’s definitely not the best, but that isn’t saying its the worst either. flavours felt a tad muted and I struggled to get that dense and flavourful puff even when vaping on the higher wattage settings. When it comes to durability, there’s a good reason that Joyetech included 5 of these NotchCoil heads in the kit. They last well below above the average lifetime of your typical coil head which is at about 7 days.
Power Flexibility
The Joyetech Espion Silk offers a plethora of vaping options which is a surprise given its diminutive size. Aside from the standard variable wattage mod, bypass mode and temperature control are also offered with support for Nickel, stainless steel, and titanium coils. The mod also has support for adjustable TCR for those who feel like tweaking their vape down to the tiniest detail.
When it comes to atomizer compatibility, the 510 connection on top of the Joyetech Espion Silk supports tanks and RDAs with diameters that go up to 22mm. Anything wider than that will leave you with some overhang on your device, so just keep that in mind before deciding to purchase a separate atomizer for this kit.
Ease of Use
Thanks to the OLED touchscreen, navigating the various functions and vaping modes on the Joyetech Espion Silk feels intuitive but the small size of the screen that vapers with larger hands might experience some trouble making minute changes or selections on the sub-1-inch screen.
The Joyetech Espion Silk already comes built-in with a 2800mAh battery which is a good feature for beginners that don’t want to have to purchase a battery separately. This also eliminates some of the precautions which are usually necessary when handling battery cells as the included battery is safely integrated into the rubberized coating of the mod.
Portability
With dimensions measuring out to a portable 29.5*40.0*120.0mm the Joyetech Espion Silk easily fits into the palm of your hand. The smooth texture also makes it easy for the device to slide in and out of your pocket for easy storage. As for vaping on the go, the NotchCore tank makes use of the push to open top cap on the tank making it quick and easy to access the tank fills ports for easy refilling.
The 2800mAh battery definitely keeps things going. While heavy vapers might find the need to recharge at some point of the day, more casual vapers should find the device’s battery life to be more than satisfactory, easily putting out enough power to get them through an entire day’s worth of vaping.
Overall Experience
With the Joyetech Espion Silk’s unique hypoallergenic properties, it fills a very specific albeit useful niche in the world of vaping world. With vapour production that outstrips most low powered devices, it’s definitely a good option for cloud chasers looking for a portable option for when on the go.
Just keep in mind that the included coil heads aren’t exactly the best option if flavour is what you’re after.
If you are looking for the simplest way to make the switch check out a pod system like the Kandypens Rubi and if you are looking for a mod style kit to start with we recommend the SMOK X-Priv.
