Boundless CFX Vaporizer Review – Unchained

Updated: November 10, 2023

The Boundless CFX is a new convection vapourizer that has been gaining a lot of attention by reviewers and on social media. I was quite interested in getting my hands on one of these units as it bears resemblance to the Mighty Vaporizer and many reviews compare it to such.  Just how does it stack up against the Storz & Bickel beast? Read on to find out.

Review: Boundless CFX Vapourizer

How It Works

The Boundless CFX is very straight forward, which is to be expected from a unit with a digital display. Simply click the power button 5 times to turn the device on. The screen will illuminate and the Boundless logo will scroll onto the screen and then it will launch into the main temperature screen which resembles a speedometer of a car. The unit will begin to heat to the last set temperature, to increase or decrease your temperature setting simply press the up and down arrows located beside the LCD display. When the unit reaches temperature it will vibrate to signal you are ready to start taking draws. On the LCD display there is a timer which counts up to 5 minutes at which point the unit will go into standby mode, putting the display and heating element in sleep mode. To restart your cycle simply press and hold the power button and the timer will begin counting and unit will begin heating. To turn the unit off press the power button 5 times again and the logo will appear and scroll off the screen.

Temperature Flexibility

The Boundless CFX features precise temperature control through the LCD display on the front of the unit similar to Arizer Solo 2. You can set the unit anywhere between 25 degrees Celcius and 220 degrees Celsius. This gives users a wide range of temperatures available to them which allows each user to find their own preferred temperature. Those who prefer full flavour will want to use the device at around 180 – 190, while those who enjoy big exhales will want to go hotter, around 210 – 220 Celsius. Ultimately the choice is up to you and it will take some playing around to find the right temperature for you.

Vapour Quality

The vapour quality from the CFX is quite good. It definitely is not as pure or smooth as the Mighty’s vapour quality and on the first few uses there was a slight plastic flavour from the mouthpiece, but that seemed to diminish with time. However overall draws from the CFX were very satisfying, at the highest temperature, 220 degrees Celsius, you are able to get large dense clouds of vapour but the vapour is a bit harsh and will have you reaching for a glass of water.  Because the CFX does provide precise temperature customizing your session is easy and each user should be able to find their own “sweet spot” when it comes to prefer vapour consistency and flavour. Airflow is a little more restricted than the Mighty, but more free flowing than most other vapourizers on the market, which helps provide the user with large smooth draws. Users that want a superior level of filtration usually prefer devices that come with glass mouthpiece such as the Utillian 421 Vaporizer.

Manufacturing Quality

While plastic exteriors are not ideal for vapourizers because they tend to be fragile so far we have not had an issue with the CFX. The unit feels very well machined; there are no observable defects from the molding process, buttons press easily and are responsive with the device, and the mouthpiece fits snugly on the device. One of the most impressive aspects of this unit is the large digital display. In my opinion this is the best looking display on a vapourizer thus far, it is large, bright, and clear. The only downside is that I found myself struggling to see the display in really sunny situations, but this is an issue with digital displays on vapourizers across the board. The nice thing with the CFX is that it does have haptic feedback as well like the Zeus Arc, so you don’t need to stare at your screen to know if the device has reached temperature.

Battery Life

Like most units nowadays the Boundless CFX uses a rechargeable lithium battery that can be charged with a micro USB cable. Charging takes roughly 2 – 3 hours depending on how depleted your battery is and a charge seems to last about 90 minutes.  When compared to the other heavy hitters, like the Crafty and Mighty, the battery of the CFX stacks up well. It easily outperforms the Crafty and is pretty much on par with the Mighty, though the Mighty does seem to charge faster, probably due to the fact that it charges with its own proprietary charger rather than USB. The one issue I did have with this unit is the battery indicator, it seemed to constantly fluctuate, leaving me a bit perplexed on how charged my device currently was. When a battery indicator fluctuates like this on any electronic device it usually points towards a cheap battery. This makes me question the longevity of the internal battery on the CFX and leaves me with a bit of concern with how the unit will charge and operate a year in, especially since the battery does not seem to be removable like other devices offer such as the Davinci IQC.

Portability

This unit is somewhere between the Crafty+ and Mighty in terms of size. Unfortunately, we did not have a Goldie Locks “just right” moment with the size. It may be smaller than the mighty but the unit does still feel rather large. Fitting it in your pocket will depend on how loose you wear your pants, for the hipsters out there, it may be a struggle. The device is more easily stored in a bag, purse or murse. The battery life on this unit makes it great for a day out and the USB charging means it’s easy to top up the device when the occasion arises. You will just have to make sure you have a bag to carry the unit in if you are taking it with you for the day.

Ease of Use

This device is very user friendly like most portable vapourizers in the market such as the Utillian 620, I did not even need to read the instructions to get the unit functioning, though I highly suggest reading all manuals before using your vapourizer (do as I say, not as I do), this device is very intuitive right out of the box. Loading the device is easy as well, just swivel off the mouthpiece to reveal the large heating chamber and pack your herbs and swivel the mouthpiece back on. Cleaning the device is fairly simple as well, the chamber is nice and wide so you can easily access the bottom of the heating chamber. The only part that is somewhat difficult part to clean is the screen in the mouthpiece. It requires you to unscrew a metal fitting which was machined with far too many threads so that you have to twist it for a solid 30 seconds to a minute before the part will come off exposing the screen. Besides this small annoyance, this device is quite easy to use and maintain.

Discreetness

As we discussed in the portables section, the size of this unit really detracts from the overall discreetness. It cannot be easily concealed in your hand or slipped into a pocket. As well the LCD display on the unit is quite bright and will garner attention if you are trying to get a stealthy session in at night or a dark area. If discreetness is your main concern when choosing a vapourizer you may want to check out another unit like the G-Pen Elite because the Boundless CFX is geared more towards pure vapourizer functionality over discreetness.

Overall Experience

From a functionality standpoint we really enjoyed the Boundless CFX it has great vapour quality that would satisfy most users, despite the initial plastic taste. The device is easy to use right out of the box and does not have much of a learning curve before you start blowing clouds. The big bright LCD display gives you full control over your temperature settings allowing you to customize your sessions to your preferred temperature. We do wish this unit was smaller, it may be smaller than the Mighty but is not as compact as the Crafty and because we feel it is still a little large for the ideal portable unit. This unit is good and if you don’t need  your unit to be very portable than the CFX will serve you well. If the affordable convection vapour of the CFX piqued your interest but you are looking for something more portable we encourage you to check out the Utillian 722, another affordable convection vapourizer that is far more portable than the CFX.

Compatible with ZEUS Iceborn
This vapourizer is compatible with the ZEUS Iceborn, a revolutionary new vapour cooling system engineered by Canadian vape manufacturer ZEUSArsenal. The Iceborn is designed to produce cooler draws and bigger clouds when connected to your vapourizer. The vapour produced is ultra smooth and crisp and because of ice cooling, instead of water filtration, there is no loss of efficiency. The ZEUS Iceborn adds an additional 2 points to the vapour quality score of this vapourizer and is a highly recommended vapourizer accessory.
