Smok Novo 2 Review – Novo Scotia
Review: Smok Novo 2
Manufacturing Quality – Anything different from the original Novo?
One of the things we appreciated the most about the original Smok Novo was just how substantial the entire thing felt when held in hand which is why we’re glad to see that almost nothing has changed with the design of the Smok Novo 2.
The Smok Novo 2 exemplifies a certain heft that most pod-style devices do not have and it helps give a sense of quality to the device which lies in stark contrast to the ultra-light plastic materials used by every other pod-style device out there.
The zinc-alloy chassis is also beautifully outfitted with a marble-like finish which is also available in a series of well-chosen colors that help give the device a touch of class.
The overall shape doesn’t see any changes in this 2nd iteration of the device which means that the ergonomic mouthpiece still retains all of the comfort the original had. Molded into a shape which resembles a whistle, the mouthpiece cups the lips perfectly and while this doesn’t sound like a big deal in writing, it makes a big difference when it comes to enjoying the overall vaping experience on this kit. If you are looking for a 510-thread battery for oil cartridges we suggest checking out the PCKT One Plus.
flavour Quality – Has the flavour quality improved on the Novo 2?
While the OG Smok Novo worked fine for most intents and purposes, after extended use we felt that it lacked a bit of oomph, something that could only be compensated by switching to a higher nic e-liquid.
The Smok Novo 2 improves on this with its slightly increased power output which shoots the device’s power output up to a maximum of 24 watts depending on the coil used. The kit includes a 1.0-ohm and 1.4-ohm MTL pod, both of which can hold up to 2ml of e-liquid.
The lower resistance on the 1.0-ohm pod produces a much higher yield when it comes to vapour production although it has to be noted that we preferred the tight restrictive airflow on the 1.4-ohm MTL pod thanks to its notable flavour production and throat hit.
Like most other pod-style devices, the Smok Novo 2 works best when paired with nicotine salt e-liquids thanks to their higher nicotine content which produces a more satisfying throat hit.
Power Flexibility – Can you change voltage on the Smok Novo 2?
Aside from the option to use either of the two supported pods/coils as well as the freedom to fill the pods with any e-liquid of your choosing, the Smok Novo 2 doesn’t have much going for it in terms of options.
This is pretty much par for the course as far as pod-style devices are concerned though the Smok Novo 2 does manage to eke out most of the competition when it comes to overall power delivery.
Another improvement that’s important to point out is the contact points on the new iteration have been slightly redesigned to ensure more solid contact. The old Smok Novo tended to disconnect randomly even when it looks like the pod is secured which results in the device failing to fire when taking a puff. If you are someone who also uses 510 oil cartridges and other vapers have reported Yocan Wit is a good place to start.
Ease of Use – Is the Novo 2 just as easy as the original?
The Smok Novo 2 uses a disposable pod design which only requires you to fill the pod via the accessible side port (removing the pod from the base device is necessary).
While this is slightly easier to set up than the pod assembly of similar devices such as the Aspire Breeze where the actual coils are threaded in by hand separately, the added convenience is only marginal and we feel that just makes the Novo pods more expensive than its competitors.
That aside, the Smok Novo 2 is easy and fairly straightforward to use. Simply charge up the device via the included micro USB port and fill up the pod.
The singular button is used to fire up the device as well cycle it on and off between an on and off state. The LED indicator used to relay the remaining is simple in design but effective when it comes to giving you a rough idea of how much power is left.
Portability – Equally as portable as its predecessor?
With the dimensions of the Smok Novo 2 measuring out to 88.3mm by 24.5mm by 14.5mm, it’s a pretty compact device that fits easily into any pocket.
The smooth and rounded edges of the Smok Novo 2 make it comfortable to hold even during extended vaping sessions although we wished that the device could have some texture somewhere along the facade or the sides to make it easier to grip, especially for those with sweatier than average palms.
Another major improvement seen with the Smok Novo 2 is its highly increased battery life, almost double that of the original Smok Novo’s battery which was rated at 450mAh. The Smok Novo 2 uses an 800mAh battery which should be sufficient for all-day vaping with light to moderate use.
Overall Experience – The Novo Kid in Town
While the Smok Novo 2 might not have the absolute best specs in its size category, we can confidently say its among one of the best looking pod-style devices so far.
The newly upgraded 800mAh battery still falls behind other popular mainstays such as the Aspire Breeze or the Nautilus AIO, but the Smok Novo 2 has got the rest of the pack beat when it comes to aesthetics and its sheer number of coil/pod options to choose from.
Those looking for the absolute best bang for buck mod regardless of looks should be advised elsewhere, while those looking for a great looking kit with the slightest sacrifice in performance should feel right at home with the Smok Novo 2.
